George of Tuppence

George of Tuppence

Tales of the Clan Beanbosh

Cleo of the Two Tongues was used to be playing tricks and it was often that she would fool the Chatty Man to get money from him. It was one trip that she would not but spend two pence as she would steal it from the Chatty Man through her Two Tongued trickery.

If it was gum in a machine she had a wanting for, she would say, "Chatty Man, do you have money that I might get gum from this machine?"

"I have indeed, but it is your own money you should be spending."

"But Chatty Man, my money is my pocket and how can I work the machine if my hands are in my pockets?" And the Chatty Man would give her the money.

Now it was that Cleo had a wanting for lunch and she said, "Chatty Man, do you have money that I might have lunch?"

"It is with your own money that you will buy your lunch this day, Cleo of the Two Tongues," said the Chatty Man.

"But I have no money," said Cleo.

"It is just this very morning that I gave you money and you not having spent it because it is my own money you've been using all day."

"But that money is in my shoe," said Cleo. "It is not another Twopence you will get from me, Cleo of the Two Tongues. It is out of your shoe that you will eat this day."

"But how is it that I am to get my money from my shoe and me standing on my feet? Give me one Tuppence and I will be happy."

"It is not a tuppence that I have to give you this day," said the Chatty Man and with that Cleo of the Two Tongues struck him with her druid rod.

The Chatty Man pointed his finger to scold her, but if he did it was a fountain of tuppence that poured from his hand. He opened his mouth to scold her, but if he did it was tuppence that fell from his tongue. They poured from his ears and his pockets and his shoes and his hat and was not but an instant that he was covered in tuppence and Cleo taking some for her lunch. This is how it is that the Chatty Man came to be sometimes called George of Tuppence.
